On Saturday, March 15, 1998, during the Fifth Oxford Conference for the Book, Elizabeth Spencer returned to the University of Mississippi, where in 1948 she was Instructor of English. She read “Field of Battle” from her new memoir, Landscapes of the Heart. Spencer recently passed away on December 23, 2019.

Edmund White, a 2019 Oxford Conference for the Book participant, won the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters award this November. Here’s his acceptance speech, itself an example of both his wit and his wisdom.

On December 3, Square Books will host a celebration for the publication of “Tiny Love: The Complete Stories of Larry Brown,” to whom the Fourteenth Oxford Conference for the Book was dedicated. Jonathan Miles, a 2018 OCB participant, wrote the foreword. So many OCB connections!

A library thief decimated the rare-book collections of academic libraries across the US during a 1980 crime spree. Travis McDade, the curator of law rare books at the University of Illinois College of Law and an expert on rare-book crimes, tells the story of the thefts and how the thief was caught in his new book, Torn from Their Bindings: A Story of Art, Science, and the Pillaging of American University Libraries.
